Hardware Configuration is entirely different to Hardware Installation.

Installation involves physical installation of the equipment and drivers, and testing to ensure that the devices work correctly in a generic manner, that the network is configured correctly and the devices are set up with permissions so that they can be accessed by the terminals that need to control them.

Hardware Configuration involves setting up the devices so that they print the right place, including font sizes logos etc. on printers, and that the cash drawers open at the appropriate time and that the barcodes scanned are interpreted by the software in the desired manner so that the system can tell the difference between a clerk barcode and the product barcode on a can of Coca Cola.

Before attempting hardware configuration verify that the devices "pass" the Checklist tests in Hardware Installation. If a receipt printer won't print a Windows Test page, then you are wasting you time looking at the SELLmatix Configuration information in this section. Get the printer to print a Windows Test Page first from all of the terminals that will need to access that printer.

Similarly, if you can't view the data read by a barcode scanner in Notepad or a serial terminal program, you are wasting your time looking at the SELLmatix Configuration settings. Once you can see the data read in a terminal program or Notepad, then and only then can you get SELLmatix to control the device correctly.

If you are having trouble configuring and device and it does not seem to work correctly, go back and repeat the tests on the Installation Checklists. The majority of "problems" reported to us with devices result from the device not passing the checklist tests.

What Program Controls this Device?
Almost all Point of Sale Devices are controlled by SELLmatix POS. This includes Cash Drawers, Barcode Scanners, Receipt Printers or Pole Displays. This applies even if the device is being shared over a network. For example, if a Receipt Printer is physically connected to POS terminal 2 (POS02) but is shared over the network and also being used by POS Terminal 1 (POS01) to print receipts, then the formatting and output of the documents printed is controlled by:-

  • POS01 when POS01 is outputting to the device.
  • POS02 when POS02 is outputting to the device.
The fact that the printer is physically connected to POS02 is immaterial.

Restaurant Implementation Exceptions

  1. All orders for Kitchen and Bar printers are printed by SELLmatix Control, no matter which POS terminal processed the order.
  2. All customer Accounts are printed by SELLmatix Control. Whenever any POS terminal processes a command to "Print the Bill for Table 9", this is passed from the POS to Control, and Control does the printing.
Basic Device Configuration
Basic configuration of devices controlled by the SELLmatix POS terminals is handled from the SELLmatix POS Tools Menu.

Basic Configuration of Order and Account Printers controlled by SELLmatix Control is handled from the SELLmatix Control Tools Menu.

Advanced Configuration
SELLmatix has a very flexible approach to handling devices. The capabilities of the devices which are used in Point of Sale Systems vary so widely that it is impossible to have a single method of configuring devices without heavily restricting the range of devices supported.

SELLmatix can use virtually any POS device, and fully exploit the capabilities of those devices. Even devices that are not currently available, but will come to market in the future.

The downside is that it is impossible for us to design a cute user interface to a device we have never seen and which has capabilities of which we are not aware. Advanced configuration of such devices is... "advanced". But that does not mean it is unbelievably difficult or impossible. Many advanced features are quite easy to implement, depending on the capabilities of the device.

Advanced configuration of devices controlled by SELLmatix POS is handled through a configuration file called "SELLmatix POS.cfg". This file is stored in the same directory as the SELLmatix POS data files. This is an ordinary text file that can be edited with a text editor such as Notepad (not a word processor such as Microsoft Word or WordPad because these editors add a lot of extra formatting information in their files). This is described in Advanced POS Configuration

Advanced configuration of the Account Printers that are controlled by SELLmatix Control handled through a configuration file called "SELLmatix Control.cfg". This file is stored in the Folder where the SELLmatix Control data files are located. How to modify this file is described in Account Printer Config

Advanced configuration of the Kitchen/Bar Order Printers that are controlled by SELLmatix Control handled by editing different entries in this same configuration file. This is described in Order Printer Config If you haven't already done so, why not activate SELLmatix now and start enjoying the benefits of the system now. With SELLmatix, you don't have to pay for everything up front. You can implement the system in stages adding parts as you go from the savings you make. As little as $30 gets you started. No risk. No long term commitment. Activate Now!
